Retractable Awning or Patio Cover in Las Vegas Wind?
Written October 20, 2026. The wind numbers come from the National Weather Service and NOAA, as our storm post and heat guide quoted them. What we say about retractable awnings is general, so read the maker's own manual for any model you are looking at.
Quick answer: In Las Vegas wind, a fixed aluminum patio cover is the one you can leave alone. A retractable awning gives shade you can roll away, but it is fabric on folding arms, and it has to be rolled up before strong wind arrives. In 2026 the weather service warned of thunderstorm gusts of 50 to 60 mph in the valley. The patio covers and awnings we install are aluminum. Call or text 725-502-3114 for a free on-site estimate.
How does a retractable awning handle wind?
By getting out of the way. Most retractable patio awnings are fabric on folding arms that roll out from a case on the house wall, with no posts at the front edge. The arms and the wall brackets carry the whole load.
Each maker rates its models for wind and tells owners to retract the awning before the wind goes past that rating. Many sell a wind sensor that rolls the awning up on its own. Makers also generally say to retract it in heavy rain, because water can pool on the fabric.
If you are looking for a wind rating, here is a common yardstick. In Europe, awnings are tested to wind classes under the standard EN 13561. The top class, class 3, corresponds to force 6 on the Beaufort scale, a strong breeze of about 25 to 31 mph. Ask for the rating of the exact model in writing.
How windy does it get in Las Vegas?
Most days are mild, and the storms are not. The normal July afternoon wind at the airport is about 11 mph. In the 2026 monsoon season, the weather service issued five severe thunderstorm warnings for parts of the valley, all between August 9 and August 13, for gusts of 50 to 60 mph. The strongest gust in its storm reports for the valley was 71 mph at Nellis Air Force Base on August 12.
The valley also gets spring wind events. Storm gusts like these are well past that top awning class, so a retractable awning has to be rolled up before the storm arrives, by someone at home or by a sensor.
How is a patio cover built for wind?
Through its engineering and the building permit. Every jurisdiction in the Las Vegas Valley requires a building permit for a patio cover. The permit process includes a plan review and a final inspection to verify that the structure meets building codes for wind load, attachment and structural integrity.
The cover carries its own rating. The code report for Four Seasons patio covers says each structure "bears a permanent decal or identifying tag stating allowable roof live/snow load, design wind speed and exposure and name of manufacturer."
An attached cover uses the house as one side of its support. A freestanding cover absorbs all wind forces through its own posts and footings, so ours use steel post reinforcement set in engineered concrete footings. Slight movement in a freestanding cover under wind is normal.
To be fair about it, manufacturer warranties do not cover damage caused by severe weather events. If you notice a workmanship issue after a storm, such as loose fasteners, call us.
What about sun, heat and rain?
Sun is the other half of the choice. Our awnings page puts the life of a fabric awning in Las Vegas at 3 to 7 years, depending on the material quality and orientation, because UV, heat, dry air and wind cause fading, brittleness and tearing. Aluminum with a baked enamel or Kynar 500 finish resists fading, chalking and peeling without maintenance.
A retractable awning does have one thing a fixed roof does not: you can roll it back for winter sun or open sky. If that is what you like about it, look at a lattice cover. It gives about 40% to 60% shade and lets air move through. A solid or insulated cover blocks 100% of direct sun and is watertight, with a built-in gutter.
Do I need a permit or HOA approval?
For a patio cover, yes, and we handle the permit from application through final inspection. For an awning, ask your building department. The permit exemption lists in our permit checklist include a window awning supported by an exterior wall that projects no more than 54 inches. A patio awning that reaches out farther than that is not covered by that entry.
An awning changes the outside of the house just as a cover does. In a common-interest community, Nevada law says an owner may not change the exterior appearance of a unit without permission of the association, so check your CC&Rs either way.
What can I check before choosing?
- The wind rating. Get the exact model's rating in writing, and what the maker says to do above it.
- Who will roll it up. A summer storm can come up while nobody is home. If you buy an awning, ask about a wind sensor.
- The wall. An awning hangs its whole load on the wall brackets, so ask what the wall needs.
- When and where you sit. Note which way the patio faces and the hour you use it.
- The rules. Ask your building department, and read your HOA's design guidelines.
What does City Seamless do?
We install aluminum patio covers in Alumawood and Four Seasons Elitewood: lattice, solid, insulated, combination and freestanding. We also install aluminum awnings above windows, doors, entryways and narrow walkways, in solid or lattice, including awnings with Ambassador Pan ceiling panels, which form a "W" shape on the underside. Every project of ours starts with a free on-site estimate, where we look at the patio layout, sun exposure and HOA requirements.
Frequently asked questions
What wind speed can a retractable awning handle?
It depends on the model, so ask the maker for its rating in writing. Under the European standard EN 13561, the top wind class, class 3, corresponds to Beaufort force 6, about 25 to 31 mph. Makers tell owners to retract the awning before the wind goes past its rating.
Can I leave a retractable awning out during a monsoon storm?
No. Makers generally say to retract it in strong wind and heavy rain. In the 2026 monsoon season the weather service issued severe thunderstorm warnings for parts of the valley for gusts of 50 to 60 mph.
How long does a fabric awning last in Las Vegas?
Our awnings page puts it at 3 to 7 years, depending on the material quality and orientation. UV, heat, dry air and wind cause fading, brittleness and tearing.
How is a patio cover checked for wind?
Through the building permit. The plan review and final inspection verify that the structure meets building codes for wind load, attachment and structural integrity. A Four Seasons cover also carries a tag that states its design wind speed and exposure.
Do you install aluminum awnings?
Yes. We install aluminum awnings above windows, doors, entryways and narrow walkways, using Alumawood and Elitewood materials in the same colors as our patio covers.
