Does a Pergola Actually Shade a Las Vegas Patio?
Written October 20, 2026. The heat and sun numbers come from NOAA, and the shade figures from the Four Seasons brochures, as our heat guide quoted them.
Quick answer: Partly. An aluminum lattice pergola blocks about 40% to 60% of direct sun, depending on slat width and spacing, and it lets the rain through. That is a good fit over a pool deck or a side yard. For a patio you use in the late afternoon, and especially one that faces west, the fix is a solid or insulated roof, which blocks 100% of direct sun. Call or text 725-502-3114 for a free on-site estimate.
Is a pergola the same as a lattice patio cover?
In practical terms, yes. Both are parallel overhead slats supported by beams and posts. "Pergola" is typically used for a freestanding structure, and "lattice cover" usually means one attached to the house. We build both in the same materials with the same engineering and permitting process.
How much shade does a pergola give?
About 40% to 60%, and the spacing sets the number. The Four Seasons Elitewood brochures, using 2-inch by 2-inch tubes, list 60% shade at 2-inch spacing, 50% at 4-inch spacing and 40% at 6-inch spacing.
The shade is not one solid patch. It falls in stripes between the slats, and the shade pattern moves across the patio as the sun angle changes. Air moves through the open roof. That is why lattice is the most popular patio cover configuration for Las Vegas pool areas: it reduces sun intensity on the pool deck without creating a dark, enclosed feel.
When is a pergola not enough in Las Vegas?
When you sit under it in the afternoon heat, when it faces west, or when you need a dry spot.
The heat. The normal July high at the Las Vegas airport is 104.5°F, and NOAA's hour-by-hour normals for July put the hottest part of the day between 4 and 5 PM. With 40% to 60% shade, the rest of the direct sun still reaches you and the slab. Insulated is the coolest to sit under, solid is next, and lattice gives the least shade and the most air.
A west-facing patio. At 5 PM in mid-July the sun over Las Vegas is 34 degrees above the horizon and due west, so it shines in under the front edge of the roof. Lattice is not ideal on a west-facing patio that takes direct afternoon sun.
Rain. Rain passes through a lattice roof, and a lattice cover has no built-in gutter. The monsoon season runs from June through September. If you need a dry area for outdoor dining or an outdoor kitchen, a solid cover is the right choice.
Can I add a shade cover or shade cloth to a pergola?
Ask first. Fabric stretched over open slats adds shade, but it also catches wind that the open slats would let through, and fabric does not hold up in the desert sun the way aluminum does. Before anyone drills into the cover or fastens anything to it, ask us how it affects the warranty. Manufacturer warranties do not cover improper modifications by others.
If you want full shade over part of the patio, a combination cover does it in aluminum: solid panels over the area you use most and lattice over the rest, under one structure.
When is solid, insulated or a combination the fix?
- Solid blocks 100% of direct sun and is watertight. Rain runs off into a built-in gutter. The aluminum panel heats up and radiates some heat down.
- Insulated blocks 100% of direct sun and adds a 3-inch foam core that interrupts the heat path to the ceiling. It is the coolest of the three to sit under. On our insulated covers the wiring for a fan runs inside the panel.
- Combination puts solid panels over one section and lattice over another, sharing the same beam and post structure. The most common layout is solid over the house side, off the sliding glass door, and lattice over the yard side toward the pool.
If price is why you are leaning toward lattice, check the numbers. On this year's jobs, solid and lattice covers sat close together in price per square foot. And we price a combination cover the same as a solid-only or lattice-only cover of the same total square footage.
What can I check on my own patio?
- Which way it faces. Stand with your back to the house wall and read the compass on your phone.
- When you use it. If you sit out at 5 or 6 PM, look at the patio at that hour, not at noon.
- What it is for. A pool deck, a garden or a side yard suits lattice. Dining, cooking and a west-facing patio call for solid or insulated.
- Whether it has to stay dry. Lattice will not keep the table dry in a monsoon storm.
- Your HOA's rules. Most associations want to approve a patio cover's design, color and placement before it goes up.
What does City Seamless do?
We build lattice covers and pergolas in Alumawood and Four Seasons Elitewood Classic and Elitewood Ultra: attached, freestanding, and as part of combination designs. We also install extruded aluminum lattice, which is often specified for larger spans. Every project of ours starts with a free on-site estimate, where we look at the patio layout, sun exposure and HOA requirements, and we pull the building permit and handle it from application through final inspection.
Frequently asked questions
Does a pergola give full shade?
No. A lattice pergola reduces direct sun by about 40% to 60%, depending on slat width and spacing, and the shade pattern moves across the patio as the sun angle changes. A solid or insulated cover blocks 100% of direct sun.
Does a pergola keep rain out?
No. Rain passes through the open slats, and a lattice cover has no built-in gutter. For a dry area, choose a solid or insulated cover, or a combination cover with a solid section over the part you want to keep dry.
Is a pergola enough for a west-facing patio?
Usually not. Lattice gives about 40% to 60% shade, and it is not ideal on a west-facing patio that takes direct afternoon sun. A solid or insulated cover blocks 100% of direct sun.
Can I add shade cloth to an aluminum pergola?
Ask us before anyone drills into the cover or fastens anything to it, because manufacturer warranties do not cover improper modifications by others. Fabric over the slats also catches wind that open slats let through. A combination cover puts solid panels where you want full shade.
Does a pergola need a permit in Las Vegas?
Yes. Clark County and all incorporated cities in the Las Vegas Valley require building permits for patio covers and pergola structures. City Seamless handles the entire permit process from application through final inspection.
